In January, our company invited the sales representative from Komatsuwa TEXTILE to hold a fabric study session!
Komatsuwa TEXTILE is a very distinctive Japanese fabric manufacturer! (You could say that their fabrics are instantly recognizable as Japanese style.)
🎐 Introduction to Komatsuwa Textile:
Founded in 1954 in Higashi-Nihonbashi, Tokyo, Komatsuwa Textile later began its original fabric production with “Azumadaki” (東炊き).
The dyeing method is Komatsuwa’s secret—dyeing carefully in small batches to create fabrics that are free from unnecessary burdens, naturally soft, and exceptionally pleasant to the touch.
Komatsuwa has revived traditional dyeing techniques from the Edo period. The previously mentioned “Azumadaki” derives its name from “Azuma” (East, referring to Tokyo) and “Daki,” which means “boiling rice.” The process involves placing the fabric in a small iron pot, mixing it with colors extracted from plants, and slowly boiling it.
In addition to this, Komatsuwa has also developed dyeing techniques inspired by historical Edo-era methods, such as:
Like “Azumadaki” these three techniques are highly time-consuming and labor-intensive, but they produce stunning, high-quality fabrics that embody the dedication and craftsmanship of artisans.
